Goal

The online training provides a comprehensive introduction to pfSense®, from its origins and development history, through all important installation and configuration steps, to current features and future trends.

Participants will learn how to professionally install pfSense®, configure basic system and network settings, and implement initial backup and recovery concepts. Building on this foundation, the course covers the configuration of interfaces, the alias engine, NAT rules, and firewall mechanisms to create a solid basis for secure operation and expansion of the rule set. The focus then shifts to optimization, best practices, scalability, and the efficient use of the GUI, monitoring, and packet management. Finally, participants will have the opportunity to clarify any remaining questions, delve deeper into topics of interest such as IP/DNS blocklists, VPNs, or reverse proxies, and explore new concepts like zero-trust VPN solutions. The goal is to gain a practical, in-depth understanding of the administration, security, and further development of pfSense® in network environments of varying complexity.

Requirement

Thanks to the training recordings offered in addition to the live training, and the associated opportunity to review all training content multiple times, no in-depth prior knowledge is required for participation. The following qualifications are advantageous for active participation in the training:

• Knowledge of network technologies (TCP/IP, routing, VLANs, subnetting)
• Basic knowledge of firewalls and security concepts
• Experience with Linux/Unix or other network operating systems

Procedure of the online training courses

		Jens Groh Mr. Groh has been working with Unix-based operating systems like OpenBSD since 1998. His diploma thesis at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences was therefore dedicated to the topic of firewalls on embedded systems. He discovered the open-source firewall pfSense® in 2007 as a fork of M0n0wall and has been installing, configuring, and optimizing it for clients ever since – since 2012 on behalf of qwertiko GmbH, a hosting specialist from Karlsruhe. In 2014, he took over moderation of the German section of the official pfSense® forum, and since 2015, qwertiko GmbH, with Mr. Groh on board, has been part of the pfSense® partner program. He enjoys sharing his extensive practical knowledge with participants in numerous workshops. He keeps his training courses up-to-date, responds to participant requirements and questions, and spontaneously incorporates them into his training sessions with practical examples. 		The described training consists of online training courses that are directly available to you.
		The online training comprises a total of 16 teaching units (TU). The duration of each teaching unit (TU) is approximately 45-60 minutes.
		A certificate of attendance is provided for each lesson. This serves as complete documentation of the acquired skills. Furthermore, you will receive a summary certificate upon completion of the training.
		All online training courses are available for download in .MP4 format for at least six months.
		The language of instruction is German. Accompanying teaching materials, presentations, and desktop views may also be displayed in English.
