Our RMM vendor informed us last night that the new Patch Management Engine was released today.
Feature Upgrade Support
The highlight of PME 2.8 is the additional support for installing feature upgrades via the Enablement Package provided by Microsoft.
For those unfamiliar with the topic: Due to the time-consuming Windows upgrades involving multiple restarts, Microsoft changed its process for the spring and fall updates (e.g., 2022H1). Feature enablement packages have further reduced the actual upgrade process. As part of the regular monthly updates, Microsoft adds features to dormant files, which are later activated by a small feature enablement package. This approach is now directly supported by patch management.
Further important information
- If both versions of the feature upgrade are detected by a device, you can choose which version to approve.
- If both versions are automatically approved, the feature enablement package will be prioritized and the full package will be attempted to be installed first.
- If both versions are detected and approved, both will be downloaded before or during the installation window.
- These will continue to be classified as upgrades.
Please note that the Feature Enablement Package will only be discovered 48 hours after the initial installation of the new Patch Management Engine.
PME V2.8 also includes the following improvements and fixes.
- Improved patch detection logic for EOL devices
- Extended download timeouts for cumulative updates
- Improved logic for checking whether a third-party patch engine can connect to SIS and download the necessary files.
